SS 304L has a lower carbon content (0.035% max vs. 0.08% max in 304), which helps reduce carbide precipitation during welding. This makes it ideal for applications where welding is required without compromising corrosion resistance.
SS 304H contains a higher carbon level (up to 0.10%), providing improved strength at elevated temperatures. It's commonly used in heat exchangers, boilers, and pressure vessels operating above 500°C.
SS 310 and 310S have high chromium (24–26%) and nickel (19–21%) content, offering excellent oxidation resistance and strength at high temperatures. SS 310S has lower carbon for better weldability.
Molybdenum (2–3%) enhances resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chlorides. SS 316L, with lower carbon, is better suited for welded structures in marine and chemical environments.
Titanium stabilizes the alloy by preventing carbide formation during welding, maintaining corrosion resistance at high temperatures. It's used in exhaust systems, pressure vessels, and aircraft parts.
SS 904L is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel with high nickel (23–28%), molybdenum (4–5%), and added copper (1–2%). It offers excellent resistance to sulfuric acid, seawater, and chloride stress corrosion.
SS 317/317L have higher chromium (18–20%) and molybdenum (3–4%) content than SS 316, offering improved corrosion resistance in acidic and aggressive environments. 317L has lower carbon for better weldability.
SS 446, a ferritic stainless steel, withstands temperatures up to 1510°C. With 23–30% chromium and no nickel, it provides outstanding resistance to scaling and oxidation at high temperatures.
Tensile Strength: 75,000 psi (515 MPa)
Yield Strength: 30,000 psi (205 MPa)
Elongation: 35%
Melting Point: ~1400 °C (2550 °F)
Density: 8.0 g/cm³
SS 347H has a higher carbon content (0.04–0.10%) compared to standard 347. This improves creep strength, making it suitable for high-temperature service, like in reactors and boilers.
